You’re Invited
Stationery sets guests expectations for your wedding. Invitations disclose crucial information, such as the theme, dress code, venue and arrival time. These bespoke stationery pieces can be a vital part in the preparation of your wedding day – as what’s a party without its guests? Aoife Butler from Melbourne Wedding + Bride magazine sits down with chief stationery aficionado, Natalie Reidy from A Tactile Perception to discuss how custom invitations should emanate the beautiful details of you and your partner’s personalities and love story.
Having been in business for nearly ten years now, Reidy has a great deal of experience when it comes to designing vibrant and creative custom wedding invitations. By working closely with stationery designers, couples can create the perfect wedding invitation that brings a touch of uniqueness and an element of fun to their wedding day. Reidy specialises in this customisation of stationery and naturally encourages her clients to get creative as she caters her designs to suit the couple’s wedding
vibe. There is also something incredibly special about receiving an invitation in the post. You get to see first-hand the meticulous detail and effort put into a beautiful design that adds magic to your special day.
Love At First Sight
Your invitation is the first glimpse guests receive of your wedding day and so this first impression is quite important in terms of successfully conveying your wedding style across to family and friends. While there are numerous designs and images available online, it can be a daunting process to choose the right stationery that speaks to you and your partner. Reidy believes in “customising stationery to incorporate your own personality and your wedding vibe, so that each suite is really unique to you”. Reidy appreciates the tradition of receiving an envelope in the mail and so she always encourages couples to choose a textured card. This way couples have something “totally touchable for their guests”, explains Reidy.
The texture, colour, design and size of her stationery are all important factors that Reidy makes her clients aware of. What is important to remember is that your invitations set the tone for your wedding and so creating a design that is of the right texture and colour and catches the eye is essential for Reidy: “It’s really important to be clear about what type of event you are holding, and then to create a suite that mirrors that”, states Reidy, who also goes on to say that the first invitation is “also a really exciting lead-up for your guests, as they will get to hold this special package in their hands and then keep it long after the day is over”.
Save The Date
There are many ways couples can have fun with their wedding stationery. Depending on their wedding aesthetic, Reidy gives readers numerous examples of how bold clients can get: “You again want to think about what look you are going for. For example: a sophisticated and refined winery wedding might call for a letterpress suite with a neutral colour palette, but a big party with colourful décor would let you run wild with metallic options!” The endless paper, colour and printing options give stationery creators like Reidy and couples everywhere the freedom to get creative and experiment with designs.
Remember, there is a lot more to your invitations than what they are printed on. Why not consider playing with shapes and sizes, mixing up materials and experimenting with colours. Reidy expands on the endless number of options to really customise your wedding stationery, stating: “There are different papers and colours, different shapes, different ways of layering the items, printing options like letterpress and hot foil, and even really unique finishes like metallic edge foiling.”
You’ve Got Mail
Today’s trends are changing rapidly. Reidy mentions how couples come to her with something new and different constantly. Over the last few months, she has created everything from “a sophisticated custom design with a dog graphic and black and green theme, purple and white on-the-day items, navy and burgundy painted invitations, and pink and gold metallic invitations. Each one was based around how the couple wanted to express themselves.”
As times are changing, so is our technology. When asked about how the quick rise of digitalisation has affected the demand for paper stationery and physical invitations, Reidy states how “nothing will replace the feeling of receiving a colourful envelope in the mail with your name on it, revealing a luxurious stack of textured card inside inviting you to a wedding you’ve been anticipating – and my couples know that.” By staying true to this tradition, couples and artists can get inventive with beautiful custom textures and designs.
The fun does not end at your wedding invitations. Wedding stationery also extends to ceremony programs, menus, welcome signs and place cards. There are so many creative ways to incorporate paper goods into your wedding day, which Reidy believes are often forgotten about by couples. She believes they “really add important detailing to the styling and contributes to the sophistication of the look.”
Express Yourself
By adding a touch of uniqueness to your wedding stationery, you are giving your guests a glimpse of you and your partner’s bubbling personality. Creating stunning first impressions your guests will appreciate the personal touch. Upon choosing to customise your invitations and stationery, you are about to embark on the creative and thrilling designing process – Reidy’s favourite part! She describes how “couples really think about what is important to them and what their wedding venue says about their big day and come to me with something unique in mind. This is part of what I love about designing wedding stationery.”
Whether you are opting for a minimalistic, neutral, vibrant or bold style of invitations, passionate stationery aficionados like Reidy are more than happy to accommodate for your creative needs and emanate the love between you and your partner.
